Buckland’s 1824 description of Megalosaurus initiated the study of the paleobiology of theropod dinosaurs. Given the limited material upon which he based his taxon, Buckland misconceived of the “Great Fossil Lizard of Stonesfield" as an enormous Jurassic varanid.
