In late 2018 Koç University - Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies (GABAM) and The Friends of Music Society in Athens launched The Byzantine Musical Instruments research project.
In this project a Postdoctoral researcher, Dr. Antonios Botonakis, carried out an extensive study, under the scientific supervision of Prof. Nikos Maliaras, on locating and documenting the numerous depictions of the musical instruments that were used in Byzantine times (330 to 1453 AD).
The Byzantine Musical Instruments project was concluded in June 2020 and all of the depictions were fully integrated at a functional and fully operational database open for researchers, which is hosted at the Suna Kıraç Library, at Koç University in Istanbul.
