Herbals
A herbal is a book containing names, descriptions, properties and uses of plants in general, including herbs. Since ancient times, the study of plants was primarily undertaken for practical reasons, to provide information about the potential use of edible plants (in agriculture) and healing plants (in medicine and pharmacy). Hence plant lore was the origin of herbals, which principally deal with useful plants. The first herbals (first in the form of manuscripts, and later as printed books) were often accompanied by botanical illustrations to help with the identification of plants.
