To avoid military service in 1914, Pieter Ouborg had himself sent to the former Dutch East Indies as a civil servant. He remained there until 1938 as a teacher and drawing instructor. There he became fascinated by Indonesian art and culture: ancestral statues, temples, wajang puppets and especially masks.
