A Pokot woman seen from behind during the festivities to mark ten years of independence from Kenya
On 12 December 1963 Kenya was declared independent and in 1964 joined the British Commonwealth as a Republic. Jomo Kenyatta (20-10-1893 - 22-8-1978) became the first president.The shot was taken in Kapenguria. In this city stands the prison where Kenyatta was imprisoned in 1953 for his role in the Mau Mau movement. Since 1993 the building houses a museum (SW, 2009).
