A modified, shielded gamma scintillator has proven useful in locating subsurface fossil bone in a variety of matrices, as evidenced by the recovery of a buried dinosaur skull in an abandoned quarry. The equipment, and the method of data gathering and analysis is described, and limitations of the technique are discussed.
