Rudists were clams that formed reefs in the wave-beaten, shallow areas of the Cretaceous tropical seas, some 70 million years ago. Each had a massive, cone-shaped valve (shell), by which they were fixed to the ground, while the other valve functioned as a lid. Possibly they lived in a symbiotic relationship with unicellular algae, so that they were able to use sun-light as their source of energy. …
