Self-Portrait
Joos van Cleve depicted himself on a number of occasions in his religious compositions as one of the onlookers or the figures surrounding the holy protagonists. Some of these self-portraits were recognised by Jan Bialostocki, who detected the earliest self-portrait by the artist in The Resurrection of Lazarus in the altarpiece for the church of Saint Nicholas in Kalkar, on which Van Cleve collabor…
