The Ashington Group
Miners take part in an art class run by the Workers Educational Association in Ashington, Northumberland. These miners became known as the Ashington Group and their work was widely exhibited. Amateur working class self-expression through art was a new and exciting idea in the 193os. Mass Observation organised a popular exhibition of the group’s work called “Unprofessional Painting”.
