Das Porträt Georg Herweghs enstand im Jahr 1845. Der Kupferstecher und Maler Karl Rahl (1812–1865) stammte aus Wien und war hauptsächlich als Porträtmaler tätig. Von 1836 an lebte er insgesamt 18 Jahre Venedig, Rom und Florenz, unternahm jedoch auch lange Reisen nach Skandinavien und Paris.
