Cathedral Church of Carlisle
Carlisle Cathedral was founded as a priory by
order of King Henry I in 1122. Ten years later he created the
diocese of Carlisle and the priory became a cathedral. Henry Skrine
in his work 'Three Successive Tours in the North of England',
published in 1813, wrote the following lines about the
