Neben der Erfindung des Phonographen durch Thomas Alva Edison im Jahre 1877 wurde parallel auch das Grammophon entwickelt. Während bei den Phonographen die Töne mechanisch auf einer Walze aufgezeichnet wurden, kam beim Grammophon dafür eine Schallplatte zum Einsatz.
